The UEFA Champions League has entered its most ruthless phase. The knockout play-off first legs (Feb 17–18) delivered a high-octane opening chapter to the 2026 bracket, blending historic upsets with dominant statements as teams fight for a place in the Round of 16.

If the league phase was about consolidation, this week was about survival. From the freezing heights of Norway to the intimidating atmospheres of Istanbul, reputation counted for very little.

If the league phase hinted at unpredictability, these first legs confirmed it: reputation means nothing in this new format.

❄️ Arctic Nightmare: Bodø/Glimt 3–1 Inter

The biggest shock came north of the Arctic Circle. Inter Milan, leaders of Serie A, were stunned 3–1 by Bodø/Glimt.

  • Hero: Kasper Høgh tormented Inter’s defence throughout.

  • Concern: Cristian Chivu’s side struggled badly on artificial turf, looking uncharacteristically fragile.

  • Lifeline: Francesco Pio Esposito’s away goal keeps hope alive — but overturning a two-goal deficit at San Siro will require something special.

🦁 Lions Roar in Istanbul: Galatasaray 5–2 Juventus

In one of the most explosive results of the week, Galatasaray dismantled Juventus 5–2. It was one of Juve's heaviest European defeats in recent memory.

Gabriel Sara and Noa Lang ran riot, exposing Juventus’ defensive frailties. For Luciano Spalletti’s side, it’s a catastrophe as a three-goal deficit that leaves them on the brink of a humiliating early exit.

⚖️ Anthony Gordon’s Night of Destiny

While shocks dominated headlines, Anthony Gordon delivered the most devastating individual display. The Newcastle winger scored four goals, including two penalties, in a 6–1 demolition of Qarabağ.

Manager Eddie Howe hailed his “relentless energy,” and Newcastle now look like genuine contenders rather than hopeful participants.

📊 Knockout Play-Off First Leg Results

  • Bodø/Glimt 3–1 Inter: Norwegian fairytale alive.

  • Galatasaray 5–2 Juventus: Istanbul meltdown for Juve.

  • Qarabağ FK 1–6 Newcastle United: Statement win from the Magpies.

  • Benfica 0–1 Real Madrid: Classic Madrid grind.

  • Borussia Dortmund 2–0 Atalanta: Controlled and clinical from BVB.

  • AS Monaco 2–3 Paris Saint-Germain: PSG edge a five-goal thriller.

  • Club Brugge 3–3 Atlético Madrid: Chaos leaves tie wide open.

🧠 Key Themes: Attack on Display & Off-Field Shadows

The theme of the week was offensive ruthlessness. High-scoring ties in Turkey and Azerbaijan exposed defensive vulnerabilities in teams that usually pride themselves on structure. However, the week was not without its darker moments.

  • The Vinícius Júnior Incident: Real Madrid’s narrow 1–0 win in Lisbon has been overshadowed by alleged racist abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior. UEFA has officially opened an investigation into the crowd behaviour at the Estádio da Luz. It’s a sobering reminder of the ongoing issues facing the sport, even during its most prestigious nights.

  • Ties Wide Open: While Newcastle and Leverkusen look safe, matches like Brugge vs. Atlético (3–3) prove that the new format allows underdogs to drag heavyweights into deep water.

🔮 Looking Ahead to the Return Legs

The return legs on February 24–25 are shaping up to be must-watch television. Inter Milan and Juventus both need historic turnarounds to avoid the ignominy of a play-off exit before the Round of 16 even begins.

The winners will join the pre-qualified top-eight seeds in the Round of 16 draw on February 27.
